This week tension spiked after Ethiopia announced they would start filling the GERD in July without an agreement with Egypt and Sudan, which also feels threatened by the dam. This prompted Egypt to place its armed forces on the highest state of alert, among other tensions in the region. Ethiopia has also recently deployed anti-aircraft missiles around the dam.

Egypt and Sudan both feel significantly threatened by the dam, and believe the GERD threatens their natural security. Both countries fear that the GERD will significantly decrease the water flow of the Nile, causing droughts and significantly harming their citizens and economies. 88% of Egypt’s water comes from the Nile, and Egypt consumes 66% of the Niles water. On the other side, Ethiopia is hoping that the GERD will transfer their country into an exporter of electricity generated by the dam.

An Egypt-Ethiopia war still remains low for the time being. The GERD will not be fully operational until 2022, leaving time for negotiations to succeed. The GERD will definitely be something that needs to be watched in the future. As time passes without an agreement, that only increases the chances of a military strike on the GERD by Egypt with likely assistance from Sudan.
