Believe it or Not, This is Actually a Toyota…
Initially developed for the Japanese Self Defense Forces, the Toyota “Mega Cruiser” was basically Japan’s version of the Humvee.
The Tokyo Motor Show Revelation
First being revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1993, the Mega Cruiser was by far the largest “SUV” ever developed by Toyota. Power came from a 4.1 L turbo diesel inline-4 engine, which cranked out 153 horsepower and 282 lb⋅feet of torque. It featured front, center, and rear differential locks, as well as four-wheel steering, which gave it rather decent maneuverability.
From Military to Civilian Markets
Much like the Humvee, the Mega Cruiser was also offered on the civilian market as well. A small number of them did find their way into use by both Japanese law enforcement and fire departments. But only a handful were actually bought by the public and were never exported. Which honestly was a lost opportunity, cause I could see them being a real winner for Toyota in third-world markets.
Production Numbers and Legacy
Still, 3,000 units were produced overall. Most of which are still in service with the JSDF.
