Capsizing Incident of the Iranian Destroyer Sahand
Two sailors are confirmed to be dead, after Iranian “Destroyer” Sahand capsized while undergoing maintenance at the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.
Details of the Incident
According to Iranian sources, the ship suffered problems in the ship’s balance tank or water infiltration during repairs. This resulted in the vessel being partly submerged, and currently, crews are working to repair and refloat the vessel.
The Sahand: Not a Typical Destroyer
Though classified as a “Destroyer” by the Iranian navy, the 2000-ton Sahand is more like a missile Corvette. She was built in Iran by ship manufacturer Nedaja and is named after another vessel that was sunk by the U.S. Navy during Operation Praying Mantis in 1988.
