First Poland… Now Romania
Recently, it has been reported that the Romanian Ministry of Defense is STRONGLY interested in acquiring the M1 Abrams for their land forces.
Romanian Ministry of Defense Evaluates the M1 Abrams
According to Maj. Gen. Teodor Incicaș, the head of the armaments directorate of the Romanian MoD, the M1 was selected after being evaluated by officials from the Army.
This comes as a number of former Soviet Bloc nations are attempting to phase out their old Soviet-era equipment and replace it with modern stocks. At present, the Romanian Army currently operates the TR-85 MBT, which is a domestically produced tank based on Soviet-era designs.
Romania’s Move Towards Modernization
No official number has been given as to just how many Abrams will be ordered, but some have said that up to 54 units may be ordered.
