GSh-23V 23mm Dual Auto-cannon: Your Argument is Invalid
Design and Development
The GSh-23V was designed in 1965 in the Soviet Union to be used mainly on helicopters and aircraft. The Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-23 works on the principles of the Gast Gun, developed by German engineer Karl Gast in 1916. To make it simple, one barrel’s action operates the action of the other barrel. As it is mechanical, not electrical, there is no spooling up time.
Advantages and Features
This means this gun is simpler to use and maintain than a Gatling type gun and its initial rate of fire is also higher (up to 3600rpm) as it is instantaneous as soon as the trigger is pulled.
Deployment and Usage
This cannon has seen action on board MiG-21, MiG-23, in the tail turret of Il-76, Tu-95, and Tu-22M both as a weapon and a flare/chaff dispenser and of course, on board the Mi-24P and Mi-35 as seen in this picture.
