Japanese Tanks for Philippines???

Japanese Tanks for Philippines

Recently, a number of reports have begun to surface suggesting that the Philippines Army is interested in acquiring the Japanese made Type-74 MBT. While others have erroneously announced that the Japanese Government has decided to donate the Type-74 to the Philippine Army.

These reports came right after it was reported that Tokyo was looking to provide a security cooperation grant to the Philippines, which would see the country possibly receiving Japanese-built Fuji-Bell UH-1J Huey helicopters and AH-1 Cobra Gunships. Both of these aircraft are slated for retirement from the Ground Self-Defense Forces.

Much like the helicopters, the Type 74s are also slated for retirement, but at present, there is no confirmation that any of these units will be transferred to the Philippine Army.

The Type 74 Main Battle Tank first entered service with the JGSDF in 1975 and was manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. 873 units were built and are now slated for retirement, as they are to be replaced by the Type-10.
