Operation Overlord Naval Forces
Just some of the ships that took part in Operation Overlord, either directly or in a supporting role. All of whom are still afloat today, with one still in active service with the Mexican Navy.
HMS Medusa and Fire Support Ships
HMS Medusa was used as a marker ship to guide American minesweepers and landing craft to their target.
HMS Belfast, USS Texas, and USS Laffy (DD-724) bombarded German positions along the French coast and provided some fire support for ground troops.
Minesweepers and International Contributions
USS Threat was one of the many minesweepers that were on operation prior to the landings and is currently in service with the Mexican Navy as the ARM Francisco Zarco.
His Majesty’s Canadian Ship Haida and Polish Destroyer ORP Błyskawica, though not taking part in the shore bombardment operations, were part of the destroyer screen that protected the landing forces from German counterattack, taking part in the Battle of Ushant just three days later.
