Kommuna Salvage Ship: The Old Girl is Still Sailing!
Laid down in 1912 and commissioned in 1915, the Kommuna is a double-hulled Catamaran salvage ship. Kommuna has served in the Imperial, Soviet, and Russian Federation navies and sailed through the Russian Revolution and two World Wars!
Historical Significance and Service
Completely refitted in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s and redesignated as a rescue ship in 1999, Kommuna is now operating a British-built rescue submarine (received in 2009) and is part of the rescue vessels squadron of Sevastopol (Black Sea Fleet).
Modern Functions
Well maintained, the 108-year-old girl is doing just fine and isn’t showing any signs of wanting to retire.
