Lazy Dog
Those unguided missiles were tiny, measuring less than 5 cm long (2 inches) and only weighing about 13 grams (0.5 ounces).
The Power of the Lazy Dog
Dropped from a plane, however, they would pick up speed of up to 500 mph and hit their target with the force of a .50 calibre bullet. Those “bombs” were put in a cluster type dispenser that would open at a preset altitude, spreading them over a large area. Those kinetic projectiles were used in Korea and in Vietnam and were able to penetrate the jungle’s canopy, soft-skinned vehicles, and light cover, sometimes penetrating up to 2 feet into the ground.
Effectiveness and Impact
The lazy dog bombs proved to be a very cheap and very effective anti-personnel weapon system that was also indiscriminate and could cause horrific injuries.
