Colombian Ministry of National Defence’s New Acquisition
The Colombian Ministry of National Defence has announced that it has placed an order for 18 x ATMOS 155mm self-propelled howitzers from Israel’s Elbit Systems.
Details of the Deal
The deal, which is said to be worth an estimated $101.7 million, has come as a huge surprise. It was previously believed that Nexter’s CAESAR six-wheel self-propelled Howitzer would have been selected for the Colombian Army. However, the CAESAR was deemed too expensive, costing Bogota $114 million, compared to Elbit’s offer of $101.7 million.
Context of the Acquisition
This acquisition comes as the Colombian government ramps up its operations against the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), who announced plans to rearm themselves back in 2019.
