Morocco’s Military Aid to Ukraine
Recently, the Kingdom of Morocco announced that it will supply Ukraine with spare parts for its T-72 tanks. This makes Morocco the first African country to send military aid to Ukraine.
Background on Morocco’s T-72 Tanks
The Moroccan Army currently has “several dozen” T-72 MBTs which it acquired from Belarus between 1999 and 2001. However, these tanks have been surpassed by more modern American M1A1SA and Chinese VT-1A main battle tanks.
Shift in Morocco’s Stance
This is a very interesting development since Morocco initially took a neutral stance when Russia invaded back in February. They had even abstained during the vote at the UN General Assembly last March, condemning the invasion. However, it appears that Rabat is no longer concerned with ruffling Moscow’s feathers, as the kingdom recently took part in a meeting in Germany where numerous nations pledged to continue their support of Kyiv. ~NC
