Introduction to The Wagner Group
One of the more infamous “units” Russia has deployed to Ukraine. Are they getting desperate? Allegedly formed sometime in 2014, “The Wagner Group” is a Private Military Corporation based in Russia and has been active in Ukraine long before the February 24th invasion.
Global Deployments and Challenges in Ukraine
Prior to this, units belonging to the Wagner Group have been deployed to numerous hotspots around the world. Most notably Libya, The Central African Republic, and Syria. But it seems that their most recent deployment to Ukraine is being a lot more problematic.
Recruitment Challenges and Internal Strife
In the last few weeks, videos apparently showing representatives of the Wagner Group visiting Russian prisons and attempting to recruit more members have surfaced. It’s no secret that despite being composed of “former” members of the Russian military, the Wagner Group has taken heavy losses. Recently, it was reported that Aleksei Nagin, a high-ranking member of the PMC and three-time Order of Courage recipient, was killed by advancing Ukrainian forces. There are rumors that there may be friction growing between the PMC and regular Russian forces.
Impact of Leadership Loss
Now let me state, I AM NOT SAYING THESE RUMORS ARE TRUE, but the loss of Nagin has come as a huge blow to the Russian forces and Wagner. ~NC
