Rooi what?!?! Denel Rooivalk Attack Helicopter
Designed in the 80s, the Rooivalk first flew in 1990 and entered service with the South African Air Force in 2011. You would not guess it looking at it, but it is developed from the SA 330 Puma!
Design and Capabilities
Don’t think this is a poor man’s version of an attack helicopter, though, because the Rooivalk is straight badass: Its cockpit is armored and is crash resistant. Furthermore, it is designed for stealth with a low radar and infra-red signature. The pilot and gunner both use the Thales TopOwl helmet-mounted sight display which helps them navigate the helo and aim the weapon systems such as the cannon and various guided missiles embarked (choice of AA and anti-armor missiles). The integrated FLIR system gives the pilot all weather/day and night capabilities.
Defense Systems
The Rooivalk is also well defended with its integrated electronic warfare system that detects radar and laser targeting systems and automatically deploys counter-measures.
