Sean Connery: From Navy Man to Iconic Spy
Before he was a “Spy”, he was a Navy man…
Sean Connery’s Naval Service
Not many people are aware of this, but before getting into acting Sean Connery was a gunner in the Royal Navy. In 1946, Connery joined the Royal Navy and was sent to train in Portsmouth at the naval gunnery school, where he was trained in anti-aircraft guns.
Assigned to H.M.S. Formidable
He was even assigned to the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Formidable as an Able Seaman. However, his Navy career was cut short due to a duodenal ulcer, and he was given a medical discharge at the age of 19.
Transition to Acting
After this, Connery took up some odd jobs before taking up acting and the rest, as they say, is history.
