Update on the Haiti Situation
Okay…. We finally have an update on the Haiti Situation.
Earlier this year, I did a post on the ongoing crisis within Haiti and the potential collapse of the nation. At the time of that post, up to 80% of the capital of Port-au-Prince was overrun with gangs and what was left of the Haitian National Police was basically on life support.
International Peacekeeping Force
Now we have news that an International peacekeeping force is being assembled. But what is really interesting is that the force which is being created will be led by Kenya. Recently it was announced by the Kenyan government that up to 1000 Kenyan Police Officers are ready to be deployed to the French-speaking Caribbean nation, to not only assist the National Police but train local officers as well. This was an offer that was welcomed by not only the Haitian government but regional governments as well. As both Jamaica and The Bahamas have also announced their intentions to deploy troops as well.
Concerns Over Human Rights
But while this move by the Kenyan Government has been celebrated by many, there are some concerns about the possibility of abuse. As the Kenyan Police Force has been accused of human rights violations over the years, especially during Kenya’s COVID-19 curfew and during protests over rising costs of living.
