USS San Diego: The First Major Allied Warship to Enter Tokyo Bay
The Pivotal Role of San Diego
USS San Diego, an Atlanta-class Light Cruiser, holds a significant place in history as the first major allied warship to enter Tokyo Bay after the Japanese surrender on 27 August 1945.
Path to Historic Entry
Not only was she the first warship to enter Tokyo Bay, but she was also the first allied vessel to dock in Japan, specifically at the former Imperial Japanese Naval base at Yokosuka. Her iconic journey marks an important milestone in the closure of World War II.
Accepting the Surrender
In addition to these historic firsts, the USS San Diego also accepted the surrender of the battleship Nagato, the last battleship Japan had at the end of the war. This event highlighted the significant role the ship played during the end stages of the conflict.
Despite being the second most decorated warship in the U.S. Navy, the USS San Diego was undoubtedly Numbah Wan! 😉
