USS San Diego: The Most Decorated American Cruiser of WWII
The most decorated American Cruiser of WWII and the second most decorated warship, right behind the USS Enterprise.
Commissioned in July of 1941, USS San Diego (CL-53) was an Atlanta-class light cruiser/Anti-Aircraft cruiser. Just one of only 8 that were built for the U.S. Navy. Despite missing the Battle of Midway, San Diego would go on to become one of the most decorated warships of the war. As she took part in almost every single major engagement of the Pacific.
Role in Major Pacific Engagements
San Diego gave anti-aircraft protection for Enterprise as part of the decisive three-day Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. She provided air cover for the “USS Robin” (HMS Victorious) in support of the invasion of Munda, New Georgia, and of Bougainville. Long story short, San Diego was everywhere in the Pacific and took part in every major raid/operation the U.S. took against Japanese forces.
Notable Achievements and Legacy
But her most notable achievement was being the first American warship to dock in Japan after the surrender and even accepted the surrender of the Japanese Battleship Nagato.
Now while the Light Cruiser’s achievements are usually overshadowed by other American ships, she is not truly forgotten. A memorial currently exists in the vessel’s namesake city and if you play a certain mobile game, San Diego is a popular playable character known for both her Anti-Aircraft ability and for being “Numbah Wan!” 😉
