Canadian Warriors: The Forgotten Savagery
Okay… We all know the jokes that surround Canadians…
They are overly polite… They always say “Sorry”… They have a blatant addiction to Maple Syrup… But one thing people forget is that Canadians are absolute savages once they go to war. Seriously, it’s like once a Canadian hears the word “War,” something trips inside of them.
The Canadian Expeditionary Forces
This was no more evident than during the First World War when the Canadian Expeditionary Forces landed in France. During the first world war, Canadian soldiers began to earn a reputation for being absolutely brutal. As Canadian units were used as “Shock Troops,” sneaking behind enemy lines, launching raids into German-held trenches, and engaging in hand-to-hand combat. All the while using a variety of melee weapons consisting of clubs, daggers, and a bunch of other DIY weapons designed to ruin anyone’s day. Like pipe bombs and other DIY explosive devices, and believe me, they showed absolutely zero mercy to the enemy, even striking them down if they attempted to surrender.
Though to be fair, there had been incidents where “surrendering” Germans attacked their troops, so I guess they were not having it.
Respected and Feared Soldiers
Needless to say, the Canadians soon became some of the most respected (British and French) and feared (Germans) soldiers of WW1. But believe me, this reputation didn’t stay in the trenches of the first world war…
