Hans Ulrich Rudel: One Man Airwing
The Evolution of the Stuka
By 1943, the Stuka was obsolete as a dive bomber. But when two 37mm anti-tank cannons were added in pods under the wings and armor added to the cockpit, the Ju-87 became a potent anti-armor / CAS platform, albeit a difficult one to fly well.
Hans Ulrich Rudel’s Achievements
The most famous Ju-87G pilot was Hans Ulrich Rudel, who claimed 519 tanks, alongside 800 various vehicles, 150 artillery pieces, many AA guns, some armored trains, three ships, and a few bridges.
A Unique Honor
He became the sole recipient, ever, of The Knight’s Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. This medal was made of 18-carat gold with 58 real diamonds, and a B-piece made of 14-carat gold with 68 real sapphires. Only six were ever manufactured, and only one was ever awarded.
